Domestic Education - Implementing Classi

Educational settings have been shifting toward digital mediums in recent years. With educational reforms also going into place starting in the 2020 academic year, more attention is being paid not only to going paperless and improving efficiency, but also to doing things that are made possible by digital mediums in particular. With these movements afoot, more schools are implementing the Classi educational platform that Benesse provides, which utilizes the capabilities of ICT. Here we will share how it is being utilized at Noshiro Senior High School of Japan’s northern Akita Prefecture to demonstrate the value that Classi provides and what it aims to create.

ICT transitions that zero in on the challenges school face

Classi has been in use at Noshiro Senior High School of Akita Prefecture since 2017. The school had been dedicating efforts to career guidance through inquiry activities and internships since years prior, but although many students were actively engaged in these activities, upon reflection it became apparent that few of these students were actually utilizing these to make their own career choices. This led teacher and career guidance counselor Eisuke Yoshida to think “Isn’t there some way that students could reflect on their past activities whenever they want, and that teachers could also get a simpler view of the development of those students?” As he looked for educational platforms to try, he came across the portfolio function included in Classi. By using the questionnaire function that makes it possible to see and share student opinions during lessons, he also seems to have gained the positive effects of learning the opinions of students who are normally quiet, and of students being able to know what others think.

Opening up to learning outside the school

Noshiro Senior High School also actively engages in external collaboration using the group function in Classi to help their inquiry activities achieve an even deeper level of learning. For example, students report the results of their inquiries to professors at nearby universities, creating opportunities to gain feedback while also hosting joint lessons online with other high schools in the area. Students have also commented that being able to hear evaluations and opinions from outside the school has enabled them to learn broad range of information and knowledge that would not be found only within their own school. This demonstrates how Classi helps students expand their horizons and equip themselves with new skills.

Classi aims to use the school setting to unlock the infinite potential of children

Based on the philosophy of “unlock the infinite potential of children and transform learning,” Classi Corp. endeavors every day to expand Classi implementations and make improvements to the system. In the words of Classi Corp. director Hisashi Inoue, “We want to equip students living in this age of rapid change with abilities that will make them successful in society through their school environment. Our aim is to thoroughly commit to the potential of children and provide services that continuously grow this potential through IT.” Classi will continue to evolve while blazing the trail to new types of learning in the school environment, to bring new education to a new age.
