Review of Fiscal 2009 Results

Consolidated net sales in the Senior Company increased 10.6% to ¥44.6 billion.

The increase in sales was primarily due to the increase in the number of nursing homes and number of residents at Benesse Style Care Co., Ltd. As of the end of March 2010, the company was operating 12 homes under the Aria brand name, 40 Clara homes (including "care house" assisted living facilities), 67 homes under the Granny & Granda brand, and 31 Madoka brand homes. This raised the total to 150 nursing homes, an increase of 11 since March 2009.

Operating income rose 14.2% year on year to ¥3.0 billion as a result of higher sales.

In order to provide services that meet the needs of an even wider consumer base, in March 2010 Benesse made Bon Sejour Corporation a wholly owned subsidiary. Bon Sejour operates 22 lifestyle homes aimed at seniors, primarily in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area and the Kansai region in western Japan. Furthermore, Bon Sejour has concluded an absorption-type split agreement with Bon Sejour Varie Corporation (Varie) whereby seven Bon Sejour-brand retirement homes run by Varie will be spun off and absorbed by Bon Sejour from June 2010. This will bring the total number of homes operated by Bon Sejour to 29.
