Consolidated net sales in the Language Company amounted to ¥53.8 billion, a decrease of 21.2% from the previous year.

The decline in sales was mainly attributable to the negative impact of currency translation adjustments at Berlitz International, Inc. coupled with lower sales resulting from a decline in lesson numbers in Japan and other regions due in part to lower corporate demand amid the global recession.

Operating income declined 94.1% year on year to ¥0.2 billion as a result of lower sales and the negative impact of currency translation adjustments at Berlitz International, Inc.
