Consolidated net sales were ¥68.3 billion, 0.9% increase year on year.

This rise was mainly due to an increase in the number of lessons provided, particularly in Europe, at Berlitz International, Inc., which sought to provide lessons matched to customer needs amid a rapidly deteriorating world economy. Another reason was higher sales in the ELS business, which provides intensive language training to prospective foreign students.

Operating income was ¥3.9 billion, down 37.0% year on year, despite higher earnings from increased sales at Berlitz International, Inc. The overall operating income result reflected the annual amortization of goodwill in Berlitz International, Inc. effective from fiscal 2008 following a change in accounting standards.
