Review of Fiscal 2009 Results

Consolidated net sales in the Education Group amounted to ¥250.4billion, an increase of 2.4% over the previous year.

Net sales rose year on year. Contributing factors included increased enrollment in the mainstay Shinkenzemi correspondence course in Japan and higher enrollment in preschool correspondence courses in China and South Korea.; Tokyo Educational Institute Co., Ltd.'s April 2009 assumption of the operations of Tetsuryokukai, a prep school which helps students hoping to enter elite universities such as the University of Tokyo, for which nine-months worth of results was included in the current fiscal year; and firm sales in the high school business.

In April 2010, the number of correspondence course enrollees in Japan and overseas totaled 4.6 million, 130,000 higher than in the previous year. The number of enrollees in domestic correspondence courses such as Shinkenzemi and Kodomo Challenge was 4.08million, up by 40,000. In China, the number of enrollees in preschool correspondence courses was up by 70,000 to 220,000 , representing firm growth.

Operating income rose 8.8% to ¥43.5 billion. Increased expenses for sales and product enhancements in the domestic correspondence course business were offset by higher earnings due to higher sales in the domestic correspondence course business and high school business, smaller losses in the China and South Korea correspondence course businesses due to higher sales, and the Company's take over of the operations of Tetsuryokukai.
